The Backyard Beckons: Time to Think About Decks and Patio

The cooler, wet Spring we’ve been having this year only means one thing: a little less warm, sunny weather time to enjoy outside this year. We’re really going to have to maximize our time grilling, entertaining, swimming and lounging in the backyard this summer, because it will go fast! If you’ve been thinking about a new deck or patio – or just updating one you currently have – now is the perfect time to talk to the design experts at Paulis, Inc.

First, let’s discuss the difference between decks and patios. Many people use the term interchangeably, but there’s a distinct difference. A patio refers to a space placed directly on the ground and is usually poured concrete, slate, stone, brick or pavers. Decks are usually constructed of wood and vinyl and feature some type of support system holding them up off the ground.

Next, you’ll need to decide which is best for your outdoor living goals. Decks are usually best used as an extension directly off the main house. If you want to feel like your outdoors space is an extension of your indoor living area, a deck might be your best choice. Looking for an area with easy access to an outdoor grill and slightly elevated to take advantage of backyard views? A deck is the perfect option. Patios can be placed next to the home’s foundation, but patios look lovely when set apart from the home and are placed in areas of the yard with decorative landscaping. Patios are also ideal for spaces near pools. With colorful plants and flowers, a patio can be a showstopper in the backyard. Another important decision factor is elevations. If your deck requires stairs to get to ground level, consider older family members. If they’re aging in place, you may want to have a patio – at ground level and easily accessible.

Finally, think of your deck or patio, whether new or updated, as an important return on investment for your home’s value. Home builders and realtors estimate the return on investment for a deck or patio to be somewhere between 60 – 70%. Most homeowners place a large emphasis on outdoor spaces to entertain and enjoy the backyard. Make sure yours is the best it can be for the season ahead!
